Here's an example text file:

An example XLS file would be the same.  Or, you can use a text file.  
Certainly within the realm of possibility that your specific XLS file 
and instllation of Spreadsheet::ParseExcel have some sort of problem.

You should always report exact error messages.  Saying "I get an error" 
is useless information.
