[freeside] Using email addresses as usernames

If I wish to provide a service, billed via freeside, where the usernames
  that customers user are their own email addresses, how would I set
this up in Freeside?

Ought I to escape the:

customer at hisdomain.com

for a user of myservice.net into:

customer%hisdomain.com at myservice.net

?  What sort of pitfalls should I be looking out for with this approach?
