Take a look at the scripts to support outsourcing (.../bin/*outsour*).
You can run two installations on the same machine -- live and test.
(Although it's probably safer to scrounge up a second server for testing.)

(I don't know when the scripts were introduced, I only noticed them in
1.4.1beta6.)
