[freeside-users] adding fields

I need to add a field to user accounts to hold a 10 digit number.  I need to 
add this field to both the selfservice forms and the main freeside user 
screens.

Is there a howto that covers how to do this?  it looks like 'virtual fields' 
is the answer, but I'm not finding any docs on this.
