I have often found it much more useful to have undefined values  
instead of not-existing elements to test against.  I would think that  
your suggestion is good, even though I don't care about 2.x  
compatibility.

Yes, yes yes yes yes.  Break 2.x happy happy.  I hate situations  
where the original input was modified by some routine and I can't  
compare it in debug to determine the problem.

%content should remain unchanged.
%another can contain the modified input.
